A Claus Family Ski Trip Is Not Worth Your Time
Story: A gift
delivery turns into a disaster, leaving Santa Claus in trouble. His
grandchildren Zulus and Noor teamed up to save the day?
Review: This
Dutch-Belgian film is the third in a series starting in 2020, and it's supposed
to be a simple family ski trip to the Alps for the Claus family, but when
Grandpa Noel and Santa-in-training Jules decide on a secret gift of a magical
snow globe. What, things took a turn for disaster. The youngest Claus sibling,
Nur, discovers the family secret and insists on joining the gift-giving
adventure. Reluctantly, Jules agrees, and the three set off on what they think
will be a festive getaway.
However, their plan goes awry when they are mistaken for
thieves in Mexico. The situation quickly escalates, and Noel finds himself
behind bars, leaving Jules and Noor to the rescue.
Amidst the mayhem, Suzanne, the children's mother, struggles
to create the perfect romantic moment during a ski trip, adding a seemingly
unsentimental layer to the plot. Meanwhile, a subplot involving a young boy
named Felix, who is forced against his will to become a skiing champion, adds
twists and turns that at first seem disjointed but eventually blend into the
main plotline.
Despite the attempt at humor, the film falls short of
expectations. Additional subplots, such as the elves in the sauna and the
forced skiing champion narrative, contribute little to the overall holiday cheer.
The dark undertones, especially during the Mexican prison scene, feel out of
place for what should be a children's film.
The dull cinematography, with its gloomy and dark overlays,
fails to capture the whimsical and charming essence expected from a Christmas-themed
film. The production's apparent exhaustion, highlighted by strained attempts to
inject new elements into the narrative, may be time for the Claus family to
take a break. The repetitive nature of the series and the enthusiasm of both
writers and actors is evident. Most of the cast from the first two films
reprise their roles, including Jan Declier, Amber Metdepeningen, Moe Bakker, and
Bracha van Doesburg.
Directed by Ruben Vandenborre, 'The Claus Family 3' is a
disappointing addition to the series. Perhaps a break for the Claus family is a
return to the future with a new take, bringing back the magic that made the
original film a sweet and beloved holiday classic.
